From Gourd to KARMA: The Making of a One-of-One Art Toy

From Gourd to KARMA: The Making of a One-of-One Art Toy

KARMA was born from a simple idea:
what if a natural gourd could become a small symbolic creature?

For Nanami Li, the gourd is not only a traditional object of blessing. It is a vessel of nature, time, memory, and quiet fortune. Through HULU STUDIO, this ancient Eastern form is reimagined as a one-of-one art toy — something to be collected, cared for, and lived with.

Each KARMA begins with a natural gourd.

Natural gourds growing under the sun — the beginning of every KARMA.

Its shape is never perfectly controlled. Its curves, marks, small unevenness, and surface texture are all part of its character. Rather than removing these traces, Nanami Li keeps them as signs of time and nature. No two KARMA can ever be exactly the same.

As time passes, each natural gourd develops its own patina — a quiet surface shaped by touch, age, and memory.

The name KARMA carries the idea of connection, cause, and quiet return. In HULU STUDIO’s world, meeting a KARMA is not only about owning an object. It is about encountering a small presence that carries blessing, protection, and a gentle sense of luck.

KARMA is not a toy made to look like a gourd.
It is a natural gourd reimagined as a symbolic creature.

Its calm expression, soft body, and handmade details give it a quiet personality. Some KARMA may look shy. Some may look stubborn. Some may seem as if they are silently observing the world. Each one carries its own mood, story, and inner rhythm.

KARMA NO.2

  KARMA NO.1

This is why every KARMA is created as a one-of-one piece.

For collectors, its value lies not only in its form, but in its unrepeatable nature. The gourd itself is shaped by nature. The details are shaped by hand. The story is shaped by time.

Nanami Li will continue to create individual stories, expressions, and visual fragments for each KARMA. These may appear as small illustrations, character moments, stickers, or short narratives — allowing every piece to grow beyond the object itself and become part of the larger HULU STUDIO world.

To collect a KARMA is to welcome a small blessing, a quiet companion, and a piece of Nanami Li’s continuing artistic universe.
